Before she went, she sent me one letter.
There were only four sentences.
She apologized.
She thanked me for believing her eventually.
And she told me that Margaret had once said something about me.
Something Evelyn had remembered for eleven years.
Margaret had said:
“Thomas is a good man. He just needs someone brave enough to tell him when he’s wrong.”
I laughed when I read that.
Then I cried.
Because Margaret had been right.
I had spent years believing love meant protecting the person beside me from painful truths.

The wedding I thought would be the beginning of my new life became the ending of my old one.

Another chance to be a father.
Another chance to be a grandfather.
Another chance to honor the woman I had loved.
And another chance to live without lies.
I squeezed Toby’s little hand.
He squeezed mine back.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes, buddy?”
“Are you happy now?”
I looked at my daughter.
Then at my grandson.
Then at Margaret’s grave.
I smiled.
“Yes.”
And for the first time in eleven years, I meant it.
